RLHS welcomes new girls basketball coach

Racine Lutheran High School has hired Stephen Shaffer as its new head varsity girls basketball coach. Coach Shaffer comes to RLHS with more than 20 years of high school coaching experience, with the last 13 years being Melody Owsley’s top assistant at The Prairie School. He was part of the staff that won the 2004 state championship and that also made a 2013 state semifinal appearance. Shaffer was previously a coach at RLHS from 1995-1997 in the girls basketball, baseball, and softball programs. He was the head girls basketball coach for the 1996-97 season, and he also had coaching stints at Union Grove and Catholic Central high schools. Shaffer is a member at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

“We are excited to have Coach Shaffer leading our girls basketball program,” states Jason Block, RLHS athletic director. “He brings experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm that will help take our program to the next level. He will help our student-athletes to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually.”

Shaffer replaces Ben Walther, who has led the girls program the past 8 years and leaves with the second most wins in program history. Walther has accepted a call to Sierra Lutheran High School in Carson City, Nevada.

Holocaust Survivor speaks to RLHS Students

Racine Lutheran High School students listened to first-person stories told by Mendel (Manny) Chulew, a Jewish immigrant from Poland who survived the Holocaust.  Chulew was featured at the school’s quarterly CLASH assembly. CLASH stands for Changing Lives And Serving Him, and it allows speakers from the community to share personal experiences with the students.

Mr. Chulew and his daughter, Natalie Chulew, posed for a picture with RLHS teacher Nick Gasau and students Liz Nelson, Lydia Balke, Sophia Drager, Andrea Mares and Niko Burton.

April Student of the Month – Jordyn Radtke

Jordyn Radtke, a junior at Racine Lutheran High School, has been selected as the Student of the Month for April. The Student of the Month award is decided by faculty. Students are nominated in light of the 2015-16 school year theme, “Live in Peace.”

The nominating teacher shared that Radtke has faced many challenges, including an injury that kept her from competing in volleyball this year. She continues to live in peace and treat others with kindness and courtesy. She keeps a smile on her face despite difficulties and setbacks. Radtke works incredibly hard as a student and generously gives of her time. Her selflessness is inspiring. Radtke is a true friend, a diligent student and a thoughtful person.

Congratulations!
