Community Newsletter in the Journal Times by Dave Burgess

When generations of Racine Lutheran High School alumni and supporters come together, I am in awe at the depth of their fondness for the school. Today, I invite you to attend a very special event that will allow us to, once again, gather with so many people who care about this incredible Lutheran school.

The RLHS Veterans Project plaque will be dedicated at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 19. Please join our students, faculty, veterans and friends to honor and remember the RLHS alumni who also served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch will serve as the keynote speaker. Bruce Canny and David Nass, RLHS classmates who initiated this project, will be in attendance.

The American Legion Riders and the Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin will participate in the assembly, plus the VFW will provide the color guard and 21-gun salute.

The RLHS musicians, under the direction of Tim Gullicksrud, will perform patriotic pieces.

Additionally, a memorial will be dedicated to Alan Wellna, former principal Randy Baganz, and faithful supporter Norm Wilks.

A reception will follow in the school’s dining hall.

The RLHS Veterans Project began during the class of 1965’s 50th reunion when Canny and Nass, both veterans, discussed how war had impacted them. During the ensuing weeks, Canny shared a poem, “Vietnam, They Ask, So What Was It Like?” which he wrote about his tour of duty. Nass used his musical talents to transform the poem into a powerful piece titled “Good-Bye, Good-Bye.”

They approached RLHS, and we were honored to establish this project. Help us continue to gather the names of former students who have served our country. Contact Krista Long at klong@RacineLutheran.org or visit www.RacineLutheran.org for more details.

Science Lab renovation

Some of you may remember when our science lab first opened. But decades have passed, and a renovation of the science lab is greatly needed. With your support, the demolition and transformation will take place this summer, with completion prior to opening day of the 2017-18 school year.

The Science Lab renovation includes expansive, flexible space for creating innovative projects and enhanced work areas to complement the scientific, engineering and technological college- and career-readiness initiatives, plus improved safety features such as air exchange and fume hoods.

We’re excited to continue on our multi-year building improvement plan and provide an even better educational experience for our current and future students.

RLHS Golf Outing

Registration is now open for the annual RLHS Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 7. Enjoy lunch, dinner and 18 holes of golf at Meadowbrook Country Club. Four-golfer-scramble and individual-play options are available.

Grand Gala

Thank you to everyone who supported the 19th annual Feel the Love Grand Gala in February. Proceeds totaled more than $90,000, and our students directly benefit from your generosity.

The 2018 Grand Gala will be on Feb. 10.

Springing into summer

The RLHS class of 2017 is preparing for the final stretch of high school and stands poised for the post-secondary adventures that arrive after graduation. We pray we have achieved our mission to guide them in faith, character, learning and leadership by nurturing their relationship with Jesus Christ and educating them for a life of service to God and man. We invite you to join us in praying for them as they leave us.
